i think i'll stay in brooklyn
- nyt bigs up stacey-ann chin's new show (more on this soon), jamaican patties, and jamaican beverages!
- forgot to mention in the toneburst post that kid kameleon generated some toneburst history a while back, too, with nice contributions from former members in the comments.
- michael blanding responds to rick santorum for all us corrupt, craven bostonians. bravo.
- ben walker notes, from beijing, that they're bootlegging the potleaf version of willie nelson's reggae album, not that wack walmart version.
- kevin wen, with whom i had the pleasure of hanging on monday night, reports that china has over 2 million blogs and counting. like, whoa. he also reports that online-mediated karaoke has long been a major craze, with "legit" vendors as well as p2p-circulating instrumentals. apparently, one of the most popular songs in recent times is mice love rice, as in, i love you like...
- then again, maybe i won't stay in brooklyn.

I'm of an age where "I think I'll stay in Brooklyn" reminds me of 3rd Bass, but does it go back further?
i'm sure it goes back further. i mean, 3rd bass sampled it from somewhere. but, yeah, i'm of that age too.
real cool, 'cause brooklyn's cool...
well--in product of the environment, they sample Archie Bunker from an All in the Family record so I am suspect that maybe they drew from that as well for Brooklyn Queens.
I just looked on wiki:
and it lists these samples:
**Brooklyn-Queens**
You Got the Best of My Love by The Emotions
Got to Be Real by Cheryl Lynn
Jungle Jazz by Kool and the Gang
A Wild and Crazy Guy by Steve Martin
You Haven't Done a Thing by Stevie Wonder
The Metal Melter by Milt Jackson & the Ray Brown Big Band
--My guess is that it might be the steve martin track: LOL!!!
interesting! thanks for doing the research.
i have to admit, i'm skeptical that it's steve martin. just doesn't sounds anything like him. moreover, i doubt that the wikipedia article is comprehensive in its listing of the samples.
"archie bunker" ain't a bad guess -- but didn't he live in queens? to me, it sounds even older, like some sort of vaudeville reference. those ol' sample-based albums are great in this way, just chock full of suggestive references.
